A Glimpse into the future of CM - #3

Part 3: Types of models from a configuration management perspective.

In a Glimpse into the future of CM – Part 1 [1,2] the Industry 4.0 Committee of the Integrated Process Excellence (IPX) Congress concluded that a Model is not the same as a Dataset as defined by CM2. The Industry 4.0 Committee defined a model as:

a digital graphical, conceptual, mathematical, logical and/or physical construct of a real system, subsystem or component designed to support activities in the value chain.

And a dataset as:

A set of information stored in digital or physical form that must be released as a whole and can be released separately from other datasets. 

Whereas a model can consist out of multiple datasets as depicted below:

But what kind of models are out there from a configuration management perspective? How do they map onto the CM2 V-Model for development in order to understand their place in the product development process.

The I4.0 committee of the IPX Congress have defined that from a CM perspective the following types of models can be distinguished:

Application model: A model designed to represent specific features, behaviors or aspects of a real system, subsystem or component to derive and document requirements and verification approaches. As shown in below figure the Application Model is covering the top of the left side of the V-Model where the application requirements reside.

Definition model: A model designed to represent specific items, features, behaviors, 3D geometry, processes and contexts of a real system, subsystem or component to produce items (HW and SW). e.g. 3D model and software model like in UML. As shown in below figure the definition model covers the rest of the left side of the V-Model, where the Design Basis, Hierarchy, Sources & Datasets, Detailed Designs/Processes and the Source Code and Material Specifications reside.

Verification/Simulation model: A model designed to verify conformance of items to their requirements. e.g. through simulation. The Verification/Simulation model partially covers the right side and left side of the V-model and everything in between to ensure conformance of the right side to the left side of the V-Model. Verification/Simulation type models will be critical for the success of the model based enterprise to support the ever growing complexity of products.
